What To Do

Ask the children to sit in a circle.

With young children give them a coloured label with their name on. This means that when you play swap places, you can use the colours as well as the children’s names.

You can also put number symbols up to five on the label so that they can use the numbers too.

Then you can have instructions such as:

  • ‘All reds hop across the circle and change places.’
  • ‘All greens walk across the circle, shake someone’s hand and change places.’
  • ‘All two’s stand on one leg and then change places.’

All variations on the above games develop listening, concentration and following instruc- tions while giving the child a moment of focused attention.

Encourage children to cross the circle and change places.
